Before I start my speech, I want to show you my favorite video about Taiwan. In the video it includes many typical sights and also it contains two topics that I want to inform you today. One is Night Markets and the other is Sky Lantern Festival. (39-1:20)(1:34-2:09)

As an exchange student from Taiwan, I feel really proud to talk about my country. When people talk about Taiwan, the first thing that they may think of is Night Markets. There are more than one hundred night markets in Taiwan. The collections of street stalls, sidewalk vendors and small canteens are major scenes of night markets. The vendors operate from 4 p.m. Till around 1 a.m. Night markets are famous for their specialty snacks and drinks which can be seen as a symbol of the traditional foods in Taiwan. Such foods are mainly served as carry-out. I will briefly talk about two representable food in night market. The first food is “Stinky tofu.” Stinky tofu is a form of fermented tofu. You can tell from the name that the tofu has a strong odor. Most foreigners can't accept this food because of the smell, but in fact the food is really delicious. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, the dish is usually served with pickled cabbage. Trust me, once you try it you will love it.

Next is the bubble tea. All of you must know it because you can also buy it in America now. But you may not know that the bubble tea originated from Taiwan. It is the symbolic beverage in night markets.The famous tea drink is made from little tapioca balls that are boiled in black sugar and dropped in the milk tea. You can also dropped it in other beverage such as green tea, black tea, lemon juice, etc.

Not only is food served in night markets, but also lots of products are sold. You can buy many inexpensive, high-quality products, such as clothing, shoes, accessories, or toys. Also there are lots of featuring traditional carnival games such as balloon shooting, net fish, shooting marbles. Night market is definitely the most indispensable culture in Taiwan.

Besides night markets, Taiwan also famous for many traditional festivals. Today I'm going to inform you one of my favorite festival in Taiwan. That is Sky Lantern Festival. The Sky Lantern Festival is held in Pinxi in February. Pinxi is a remote hillside town. In the past, those who worked or farmed in the mountains faced the risk of being robbed or killed, and they used lanterns to inform their families they were safe. The lanterns do not function as signals anymore, but are now used as symbols of peace and good fortune. During the festival, people will write their hopes on the lanterns and fly them into the sky at the same time. Every sky lantern has carried everyone’s dream and wishes then goes up to the air. The sky will be decorated with glamorous lanterns. Once you see the scene, you may never forget it.

Taiwan is really a beautiful country not only for those two things that I have mentioned. If you have a chance to go to Taiwan, don't forget to go to night markets to try delicious traditional food. Also, go there in February so you can attend the Sky Lantern Festival, which is the most beautiful festival in Taiwan.
